What would happen if the Earth stopped spinning?
It is a question that has puzzled scientists for centuries, and there is no definitive answer. But we can make some educated guesses based on what we know about the Earth and its relationship to the sun.
If the Earth stopped rotating, the atmosphere would most certainly fly away into space. The force of gravity would no longer be pulling everything down towards the equator, so things like air and water would start drifting away from the planet’s surface. Without our protective atmosphere, life as we know it would not stand a chance; within minutes or hours, all living creatures on Earth would perish from exposure to solar radiation and lack of oxygen.
In terms of climate change, it is likely that without our planet’s rotation creating different temperature zones around the globe, these zones would become more uniform and temperatures on earth may become colder overall or even increase in some areas (depending on your location). Additionally, rainfall patterns could also change dramatically as winds which that are currently influenced by rotational forces might no longer exist in their current form.
