Not all changes are scary! The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has finally taken note of the stress and burden imposed by the ongoing pandemic on the students and has changed the exam pattern of Class 10th and 12th. Don’t let the anxiety of facing a new pattern cloud your judgment. The revised exam pattern has a safe scheme and allows students to appear for two board exams in the academic year 2021-22.
As per the novel CBSE Internal Assessment Pattern, there will be two terms in the academic year, and 50% syllabus will come in each term. The term I exam will comprise multiple-choice questions. On the other hand, the Term II exam will employ varied formats like open-ended- short answer/ long answer type questions, case studies, etc. The new internal assessment further entails consistent assessment regardless of Term Exams. Anything can be achieved with strong willpower, motivation, hard work and, of course, smart planning and strategising .
Here are some tips to help you prepare for board exams, keeping in mind the new format.
Board Exams Study Method – The SQ3R Method
This five steps method is a reading comprehension technique that enables students to identify important facts and retain information. SQ3R or SQRRR is an acronym that stands for
- Survey- Firstly, skim the chapter and take notes of heading, subheading, images, and other highlighted points.
- Question- Formulate questions from the chapter.
- Read- Start reading the chapter and answer the questions you formulated.
- Recite- Summarize the chapter in your own words.
- Review- Quiz yourself and review the entire chapter to understand completely.
Retrieval Practice
This technique is similar to a fun memory game or a quiz. It is the act of recalling information without having it in front of you. It is very useful for MCQs. Try to remember and write down the answer to a flashcard; this will help you retain information for a long period.
Mind Mapping
To all those visual learners, here’s an interesting trick for you to sharpen your memory. This is a technique that allows visually organizing information in a diagram. Firstly write a word in the centre of a blank page, then write major ideas and keywords and connect them directly to the central concept.
Leitner System
Based on flashcards, this learning technique is fun. All you need to do is keep your cards in different boxes to track when to study each set. Each card starts in Box 1. If you get a card correct, move it to the next box. If you get a card wrong, you can either move it down a box or keep it where it was.
Every box determines how long you will study each set of cards, similar to the given schedule
- Study every day — Box 1
- Explore every two days — Box 2
- Read every four days — Box 3
- Study every nine days — Box 4
- For every 14 days — Box 5
Board Exams – Control Your Screen Time
Everyone loves to spend time using their smartphones, laptops or tablets and hence, screen time has become a common distraction. Many surveys show that screen time has a destructive effect on everything from sleep to memory, creativity, productivity, and health. Therefore, reducing your screen time will help you stay focused and retain memory.
The above five study techniques/ strategies can help you change your study method to stay motivated and retain information for a longer period.
